Beginnings. In 1962 as a little boy in Wisconsin began learning yoga postures and meditation from Richard Hittleman's Yoga for Health on the local National Educational Television affiliate WMVS-TV. Studied formally in the 1970s as an undergrad at the University of Wisconsin, and then continued after transfering to New York University. With this foundation began developing unique lifetime practice. |
| Tradition. In the 1990s resided at Sivananda Yoga Ashram and Forest Academy in the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There studied all the paths of yoga, Vedic philosophy and cultural history, Sanskrit language, anatomy and physiology. Under the guidance of Swamis Kartikeyananda, Swaroopananda, Sivadasananda, Mahadevananda, Kailashananda, and esteemed Sanskrit scholar Dr. Dhirubhai Doshi received formal teacher's training and was awarded advanced certifications: Yoga Siromani (Professor of Yoga, literally "Jewel in the Crown") and Yogacharya (Master Practitioner of Yoga).
The Sivananda teachings place one in a direct lineage dating back to Adi Shankara, the 9th century interpreter of Vedic scriptures, through revered 20th century yoga revivalist Swami Sivananda, and his emissary to the west Swami Vishnu-Devananda. |

Experience. Continued to study and teach yoga classes and workshops at Sivananda ashrams and centers in south India, Quebec, upstate New York and New York City, including for-credit Fashion Institute of Technology courses.
Has also taught at New York Sports Clubs branches from Wall Street to Harlem, Reebok Sports Club N.Y., Away Spa at the W Hotel, and the Monterey and Carnegie Hill Health Clubs.
Honored to have given weekly classes at the Samuels Center for Complementary Therapies at St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital, and currently at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. |
|
|
Innovation. Created the controversial and much imitated Midnight Yoga for Men in Chelsea in 1998, written up in many publications including Time Out, Genre, HX and most recently Jane Magazine. |

Pilgrimage. In spring 2004, at the invitation of NRIs (non-resident Indians) living in New York, in an effort to inspire the youth of India to embrace the traditions of their great country, was honored to have taught and lectured at various villages, temples, schools and tribal areas in and around Latur and Nanded districts, Maharashtra, India, including Mukhed, Kautha, Nilanga, Kinwat, and at the Mahatma Ghandi Mission College of Engineering. With the guidance of Sri Virbhadra Swamiji was led to yoga with Lord Siva at Jyotirling pilgrimage sites Tryambakeshwar and Grishneshwar, and also at Ellora. |
Now. Currently studying Sanskrit and Hindi languages, and Vedic literature and culture at the Indian Consulate, New York City, under the aegis of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Indian Cultural Institute), with internationally acclaimed Vedic authority and linguistic expert Dr. P. Jayaraman. |
